Naming Day is a secular celebration ( also known as a Child Dedication or Welcome to the World Ceremony) provides an opportunity to celebrate the birth and make a formal expression of the family’s hopes and aspirations for their child. “Non-Religious people want to celebrate the arrival of their children too.” Many people think of the Baby Naming Ceremony as a civil baptism, in which the baby's presence in the family and in the world is acknowledged and celebrated - along with good wishes for his or her future life and contributions to humanity. The ceremony officially names the child in the presence of their ever-expanding circle of family and friends, and includes a series of commitment questions for the parents, the grandparents (if present), and friends. They are all asked to bring up the baby in love and respect, instilling him or her with confidence and tolerance, and emphasizing their various roles in your child's emotional and intellectual growth. |

Your Baby's Naming Ceremony may include these elements: Greeting and Introduction, Readings, Announcing the Name, Parents Promises, Family and Friends Promises, Presentation of Gift, Hopes for the future, Thoughts from Absent Guests, Toast to Baby! Baby Naming Ceremonies may also appoint adult mentors for the child. A mentor is a secular alternative to a Christian godparent, taking a special interest in the welfare and happiness of the child. Alternative terms to "mentor" include "guide parent" and "supporting adult.
